Cyclocross is sport where roadies and mountain bikers meet. Held during the fall and winter, ‘cross events usually take place on a closed, mostly grass circuit of 1 to 3 miles. Race distances vary by skill category, with the best riders usually racing for an hour. Courses include barriers such as wooden hurdles and sand pits, which force racers to dismount their bikes. Once you’ve taken the plunge and signed up here’s what you need to know.
GEAR UP. Serious ‘cross riders will ride purpose-built bikes with wider, knobby road tires and an open frame to help shoulder the bike. However, some events allow first-timers to use mountain bikes.
HOP OFF. When an obstacle forces you off the bike, always dismount on the left side, opposite the chain. As you approach the barrier, coast with your left pedal down, unclip the right foot and swing it over the bike. As you get close to the dismount point, brake gently, place your right foot on the ground and unclip your left foot. You should do all this without stopping, which will allow you to maintain your momentum as you lift your bike over the obstacle.
CARRY ON. As you dismount, you should have your left hand on the handlebar and the right one on the top tube, so you can easily lift the frame and run over the obstacle. On long climbs that you can’t ride, carry the bike on your right shoulder. This is why you dismount on the left, so the drivetrain won’t dig into you as you hoist the bike.
